Unlearning, Relearning, and Thriving as a Virtual Assistant

Every Virtual Assistant’s path is unique, filled with challenges, breakthroughs, and life-changing decisions. For Peter Noel Garcia, becoming a VA was about finding balance, after 12 years in the BPO industry, he wanted more time for family, less stress from commuting, and a sense of fulfillment in his career. His story reflects how determination, adaptability, and the right environment can turn uncertainty into success.

Finding Purpose in Family and Flexibility

Peter’s journey into the VA world began with a longing for more meaningful time with his loved ones. After years of long commutes and missed occasions, he realized that true productivity isn’t just measured by output, but also by how much life you’re able to live beyond work. The decision to transition wasn’t simply about escaping the grind—it was about moving closer to the people who mattered most.

“I ran into a friend who's working with Summit at that time and introduced me to the idea of working from home… The idea brought life to me coz all I ever thought about was, how happy would my mom be if I get to visit her on the weekends, be able to spend time with family.”

Overcoming Doubts with Determination

Like many new Virtual Assistants, Peter questioned whether his existing skills were enough. Yet what set him apart was his willingness to let go of what he already knew and embrace the process of learning again. This mindset not only helped him overcome his early fears but also laid the foundation for long-term growth.

“One of the biggest challenges I had was if I am skilled or equipped to be even qualified for an interview… I had to unlearn everything I know and learn new skills, tools, platforms that I've never heard of. The training I had with Summit became the greatest foundation for me.”

A Day in the Life of a VA

Peter’s workday reflects the discipline and structure required of a Transaction Coordinator. His focus on staying ahead of deadlines and proactively communicating with clients and partners ensures that no detail is overlooked. It’s a role that demands not just organization, but also the ability to build trust through consistency.

“I always check my calendar… Being a transaction coordinator is about paying attention to details, especially on closing dates and deadlines. I usually communicate with escrow officers and lenders to get updates and provide updates.”

Learning Balance from Mentors

One of Peter’s most valuable lessons came from seeing his client as a mentor. This unique perspective allowed him to approach his work with humility and openness, learning as much from the client relationship as he gave to it. For him, tools and systems are important, but communication remains the true anchor of efficiency.

“My client is my greatest mentor. Communication is one thing that keeps me afloat and effective. We use a central platform that consolidates everything.”

Celebrating the First Win

Landing the first client is often a defining moment for any VA. For Peter, it represented more than just a job—it was validation that he belonged in this profession. That early win silenced his doubts and confirmed that perseverance would always lead to the right opportunities.

“It was the day that I got my first client!… It was like the culmination of all the uncertainty and self-doubts that I am not fit to be a VA.”

Recognition That Fuels Growth

Awards and recognition often serve as milestones in a VA’s career, but for Peter, the true reward was the pride expressed by his client. That kind of validation highlights the deeper value of a VA-client relationship—where achievements are shared and celebrated together.

“I thanked my client and she said, ‘I want you to win more awards.’ She was so proud of me!”

Adapting to Every Client

Each client comes with their own priorities, workflows, and expectations. Peter’s ability to adapt has allowed him to build lasting relationships, proving that success as a VA isn’t only about technical skills, but also about emotional intelligence and flexibility.

“Every client is different… Regardless of the task, always communicate everything with your client… My third client… She always got my back! We look out for each other, compliment each other and communicate well.”

A Life Transformed

The impact of becoming a Virtual Assistant extends far beyond Peter’s career. From financial milestones like buying his dream car to personal joys like spending more time with his mom, his story is proof that work-life balance is not only possible but deeply rewarding. Beyond family and career, Peter also found community. Together with fellow Summit VAs, he helped form a basketball team that proudly brought home two championships,   a feat made possible through the all-out support of Summit’s VP of Operations, Ms. Bernadette Canero. These moments highlight how being part of Summit is not just about work, but also about belonging to a supportive family that celebrates victories both inside and outside the virtual workspace.

“I was able to see my mom more… bought me my dream car… started a basketball team with Summit… ride with my Motorcycle Club and do charities… But the most impactful was the stress-free environment of working at home.”

Skills Gained Along the Way

In his VA journey, Peter has grown not only as a professional but also as a person. His ability to remain calm under pressure, adapt to new challenges, and communicate effectively are qualities that extend far beyond work and into everyday life.

“I honed my communication skills and being adaptive to all kinds of situations… Maintaining a positive attitude and calming yourself under pressure is one I've developed…”

Words of Advice

Peter’s advice to aspiring VAs is a reminder that everyone starts as a beginner. Confidence and mastery come with time, but what matters most is having the courage to take the first step.

“Never second guess nor doubt yourself… Allow yourself to start as a beginner… Being a SUMMIT VA is AWESOME!”

Stories like Peter’s remind us that Virtual Assistance is more than just a career path, it’s a chance to create a fulfilling, balanced life while making a difference for others.
