From the Academe to a Thriving VA Career

Every Virtual Assistant brings a different story, background, and strength into the industry. Some come from customer service, others from administration or operations. For Leo Patrick Evangelista, his journey began in the academe.

What makes his story powerful is not just the transition itself, but the mindset that allowed him to adapt, grow, and eventually become a trusted specialist reviewing contracts and legal compliance documents for multiple brokerages.

Finding Opportunity in a Completely Different Industry

Leo shared that one of the biggest reasons he entered the Virtual Assistant industry was the opportunity to create better balance between work and personal life while still continuing professional growth.

“The ability to work from home and balance personal life with professional growth is a huge motivator.”

Coming from a background in anthropology and university lecturing, he initially had to figure out how his existing expertise could fit into a completely different environment.

“I came from the academe, and I leveraged my expertise as a social anthropologist and university lecturer to fit and adapt to the specific needs and goals of my client.”

That insight alone reflects something many successful Virtual Assistants eventually discover: transferable skills matter more than people think. Communication, analysis, adaptability, organization, and critical thinking can create value across industries when paired with the right mindset.

Overcoming Self-Doubt in the Beginning

Like many professionals entering a new field, Leo admitted that self-doubt became one of his biggest early challenges.

“The biggest challenge I faced when I started out was overcoming self-doubt.”

Even with confidence in his intelligence and ability to learn quickly, adjusting to unfamiliar systems, terminology, and workflows required humility and patience.

One of the strongest reflections from his story was this:

“No matter how smart you are, you can't know everything.”

Instead of trying to prove himself immediately, he chose to trust the people training him and learn from those already experienced in the industry. That willingness to stay teachable became a turning point in building his confidence.

This is something many aspiring VAs overlook. Growth often starts not from knowing everything already, but from being willing to learn consistently and remain adaptable.

Earning Trust Through Consistency

Over time, Leo’s responsibilities evolved significantly. Today, he specializes in reviewing contracts and documents for legal compliance across three different brokerages.

That level of responsibility requires precision, discipline, and deep trust from clients.

“This specialized work is something I deeply appreciate because it shows just how much trust they have in my expertise.”

One important insight here is that long-term success as a VA is rarely about flashy results overnight. Trust is built quietly through consistency, reliability, and attention to detail over time.

Managing Multiple Projects with Structure

Handling multiple brokerages and deadlines could easily become overwhelming without a proper system in place. Leo shared that time blocking and prioritization have been essential to staying productive.

“Balancing multiple projects requires one thing first and foremost: proper time blocking.”

He also highlighted the importance of short breaks and structured workflows similar to the Pomodoro Technique.

One valuable takeaway from this is that productivity is not about constantly working without pause. Sustainable performance comes from having systems, structure, and discipline that allow consistency without burnout.

A Full-Circle Moment of Recognition

Among all his experiences as a Virtual Assistant, one moment stood out the most.

“My proudest moment as a Virtual Assistant was being recognized by both my client and Summit at the same time.”

He described it as a “full-circle moment” because the recognition came from both the people who trained him and the client benefiting from his work.

That kind of acknowledgment carries weight because it reflects not only skill development, but personal growth and professional trust earned over time.

The Human Side of Virtual Work

One of the most heartfelt parts of Leo’s story came when he shared a deeply personal experience involving the loss of his grandmother.

“When my grandmother died, my client gave me all the time I needed to grieve.”

He went on to explain that his client continued checking in on him and made sure he was still paid during that difficult season.

“He has given me empathy and grace. I will never forget him for that.”

Stories like this remind people that behind every workflow, email, and transaction are real human relationships. Strong professional partnerships are often built not only on performance, but also on mutual respect and empathy.

Growth Through Challenge

When asked about the toughest challenge in his VA career, Leo shared how managing files for multiple brokerages forced him to adapt quickly to different systems and processes.

“Sometimes when we get in our own heads about how different things are, we get paralyzed.”

His approach was simple but powerful: focus on similarities first, start where progress is possible, and keep moving forward.

That mindset applies far beyond Virtual Assistance. Growth often happens when people stop waiting for perfect confidence and begin taking action despite uncertainty.

A Career That Changed His Life

When reflecting on the overall impact of becoming a Virtual Assistant, Leo shared:

“Being a virtual assistant changed my life in every aspect.”

He explained that the role gave him better balance, financial freedom, opportunities to use his unique skillset, and continuous personal growth.

He also developed stronger habits in organization, accountability, communication, adaptability, and self-motivation throughout his journey.

Advice for Aspiring Virtual Assistants

Leo’s advice for those just starting their VA journey reflects the supportive culture that exists within the industry.

“Do not be embarrassed to not know a single thing about the profession.”

And perhaps the most meaningful reminder:

“That is just how Virtual Assistants roll: they help.”

At Summit VA Solutions, stories like Leo’s continue to show that success in this industry is not limited to one background, personality, or career path. With the right mindset, training, consistency, and willingness to grow, Virtual Assistants can create meaningful careers while making a real impact behind the scenes.
